What Instagram automation actually does

Instagram automation is software that watches your account for a specific event — a comment on a Reel, a mention in someone's story, a direct message containing a word you chose — and responds to every one of them without you being there.

The useful version of this is narrower than most people expect. It is not a bot that likes and follows strangers on your behalf. That class of tool works by driving a browser that pretends to be a person using the app, and Meta treats it as abuse. Real Instagram automation runs on the Instagram Graph API, which Meta publishes and permits, and it is limited to conversations that other people start with you.

Three events do almost all of the work:

• Someone comments on your post or Reel. A keyword you picked — PRICE, LINK, COD — triggers a public reply in the comment thread and a private message carrying whatever you set up: a price list, a payment link, a PDF, a booking form.
• Someone mentions you in their story. You reply automatically, usually with a thank-you and a discount code, while the mention is still live.
• Someone messages you. A keyword menu answers the questions you get fifty times a week — opening hours, location, price, availability — and passes anything unusual to you.

Nearly everything else sold as "Instagram automation" is either post scheduling, which is a different product, or a policy violation waiting to be caught.

How comment-to-DM actually works

This is worth understanding, because the mechanism is the entire reason a compliant tool does not put your account at risk.

1. You connect through Facebook OAuth. You approve a named set of permissions — among them instagram_business_manage_comments and instagram_business_manage_messages — and Meta issues an access token. Your password is never typed into TamilDM and never reaches our servers. You can revoke the token from Instagram at any time, and the automation stops immediately.
2. Meta notifies us when someone comments. Nothing polls your account or scrapes your page. Meta pushes a webhook the moment the comment is posted, which is why replies land in seconds rather than on a schedule.
3. We match the comment against your keywords. If it does not match, nothing happens at all.
4. Two calls go out on Graph API v21.0. A public reply in the comment thread, so the person sees they were heard, and a private message carrying the thing they asked for.
5. The conversation continues in your inbox. Buttons, follow-ups and lead capture run on rules you set, and anything the rules do not cover waits for you.

No step in that sequence simulates a browser, logs into your account, or touches your password. That distinction is why accounts running on official APIs do not collect the action blocks that accounts running unofficial bots do.

What Meta's API allows — and what it does not

Most vendors leave this section out. It is better to know the constraints before you pay for anything, because they apply to every compliant tool on the market, including this one.

The 24-hour messaging window

Once somebody messages you, you can reply for 24 hours. After that Meta closes the window, and you cannot message them again until they write to you. Any tool promising unlimited promotional broadcasts to your past customers is either misusing message tags or is not on the official API at all.

One private reply per comment

Meta permits a single private message in response to any given comment. You cannot chain three DMs off one comment, so the first message has to carry the value.

Professional accounts only

Personal accounts have no API access whatsoever. You need a Business or Creator account, which is free to switch to and takes about thirty seconds.

No cold outreach

You cannot message somebody who has never contacted you. There is no compliant way to DM a list of strangers, and there is no setting that unlocks it.

No follow, unfollow, or mass liking

None of it is exposed by the API, because Meta does not want it automated. Tools that offer it are driving a headless browser against your account, which is precisely the behaviour that produces action blocks and, eventually, bans.

If those limits make automation sound less powerful than the ads suggest, that is the honest picture. What they buy you in exchange is an account that is not quietly accumulating risk every day it runs.

Setting up your first automation

Start with one automation on one post. People who build eight flows on day one usually cannot tell which is working.

1. Switch to a Professional account. Instagram → Settings → Account type. Creator or Business both work.
2. Connect through Facebook OAuth.Approve the comment and message permissions on Meta's own consent screen.
3. Pick one post and one keyword. Use a word nobody says by accident. PRICE works; link appears in ordinary conversation and will fire when you do not want it to.
4. Write both messages. The public reply is short and human. The DM carries the actual thing — the price, the link, the file.
5. Test from a second account before you promote the post. Comment the keyword yourself and watch what a real person would receive.

Then say the keyword out loud in the post itself. "Comment PRICE and I'll send it over" converts far better than expecting people to guess. Comment automation and DM automation each go deeper on their own settings.

Why automations fail

When a setup underperforms, it is almost always one of these five, and none of them are about the software.

• The keyword is too ordinary. Firing on link or info means the automation triggers inside normal conversation and the replies look robotic.
• No public reply. If only the DM goes out, everyone else reading the comments sees a question you appear to have ignored.
• The DM is a bare link. A link with no sentence around it reads as spam and gets far fewer clicks than one line of context.
• Nobody was told what to comment. The post has to say the keyword. Automation cannot create the trigger.
• Everything is automated, including the things that need you. A custom order, a complaint, a wholesale question — those want a person, and a bot answering them costs more than it saves.

What it costs, and when it pays for itself

The free plan is a working plan rather than a trial. It covers 3,000 auto-replies a month on one Instagram account with three active automations and 50 saved contacts — enough to run a real campaign and see whether any of this works for your audience.

Basic, ₹299 a month, raises that to two accounts, 10,000 replies, ten automations and 500 contacts, and adds the things you need once money is involved: email and phone capture, follow-up sequences, UPI and Razorpay selling straight from the DM, and removal of TamilDM branding.

Basic+, ₹399 a month, is that same plan with the ceilings taken off — unlimited replies, unlimited contacts and twenty-five automations — for sellers who are happy on Basic but keep running into its caps.

Pro, ₹899 a month, covers five accounts, unlimited replies, automations and contacts, story-mention replies, the Ask-to-Follow gate and voice DMs.

Whether it pays is arithmetic you can do yourself, and you should. Count the people who asked a buying question in your comments last month — how much, is COD available, do you ship here — and be honest about how many never got an answer because you were asleep or busy. Multiply the ones you lost by your average order value. What Instagram automation will not do for you

It does not create demand. If nobody is commenting, there is nothing to automate, and the problem to solve is the content rather than the reply speed.

It does not fix a weak offer. Answering in four seconds instead of four hours makes a good offer convert better and makes a bad one fail faster.

It does not write your posts, pick your products, or decide your pricing. It removes the delay between somebody raising their hand and somebody answering — which is a real, measurable problem for anyone selling through Instagram in India, and a narrow one.
